Nemo’s four different motives determine the type of adventure you
shall have, and rewards you accordingly by varying the victory points
awarded for the game's different tasks. Your motive also determines how
much notoriety you can gain before being defeated as an international
pariah.

Adventure cards come in three basic varieties: PLAY, which are immediate occurrences that you must deal with; KEEP, which are opportunities for you to take advantage of later, if you desire; and TEST, which are obstacles and adventures that you must overcome – gaining their reward or suffering the penalty for failure.

Nautilus Upgrade cards represent different ways that you can customize the Nautilus
on its voyage. These are available for purchase by spending the
salvaged remains of ships you have bested in combat at sea. Depending on
Nemo’s motive for the game, some of these upgrades can be particularly
useful in your quest!

The Character resources aboard your
ship are worth considerable points, but sacrificing them to reverse an
emergency situation might be a better strategy. Each of these supporting
heroes can play their part only once, so carefully consider that before
asking them to make their ultimate sacrifice.

The Ship tokens are each individually illustrated and represent
historical ships at sea during the Age of Nemo (with a few interesting
inclusions pictured here). Their attack and defense values are the large
numbers flanking their names. Sending most of them to Davy Jones'
Locker will increase your notoriety, but their yield in victory points
and useful salvage for upgrades makes every ship at sea a target.
